LGBTIQ+ tourists in Buenos Aires: how to get around
Which night to pick, how to get there, how to get back, and what ID to bring.
Por Rita Kandela · Cronista de la noche
Buenos Aires is one of the most welcoming cities in the region to travel to as an LGBTIQ+ person, with marriage equality since 2010 and an active nightlife scene every night of the week.
What visitors from abroad ask the most.
Is Buenos Aires an LGBTIQ+-friendly city?
Yes, it's one of the region's benchmarks: Argentina has had marriage equality since 2010, and the city has its own queer scene every night of the week.
Which night should I pick if I only have a few days?
If a Wednesday falls in your trip, go to JOLIE: it's free, it's fixed, and it starts at 11pm. If you're around Thursday through Sunday, FEL!ZA has a different night every day.
What ID do I need?
Your passport. It's the standard document for foreigners at the door of any Argentine club, and it's always required.
Can I get free entry as a foreigner?
Yes. You sign up the same as anyone at fiestajolie.com and show your QR code with your passport.
How do I get to the parties?
JOLIE is at Aráoz 2424, Palermo, near the Santa Fe corridor. FEL!ZA is at Av. Córdoba 3271, steps from Santa Fe and Corrientes. At night, a rideshare app is the most practical option.
Is it safe to head home late at night?
Same as any big city: better by rideshare or taxi than walking alone at night, and better on well-lit avenues than side streets.
What time does the night actually wind down?
Late. A party that opens at 11pm fills up after midnight, and clubs close between 5 and 6am.
Does the subway run at night?
The subway doesn't run in the early hours. Buses do have night service, and rideshare apps run all night.
Should I carry cash?
Yes, some cash for the bar always helps, though many places accept other payment methods.
Is English spoken at the parties?
At the door and at the bar you'll find people who get by, but the night runs in Spanish. JOLIE's website is available in fourteen languages.
What neighborhood should I stay in?
Palermo is the most convenient for queer nightlife: it has the most options and sits close to almost everything.
Are there big events during the year?
Buenos Aires' Pride March is the calendar's biggest milestone, and it shapes the whole lineup that week.
How do I find out what's happening this week?
Instagram is the most up-to-date channel for each party. For JOLIE, the date of the next Wednesday is always on fiestajolie.com.
