Bears, chasers, and the bear community in Buenos Aires

What the bear community is, its vocabulary, and where it gathers in the city.

Por Rita Kandela · Cronista de la noche

The bear community was born as a response to a very narrow gay beauty standard: thin, hairless, young bodies. Against that, it offered something else: beards, big bodies, body hair, being natural.

It's one of the warmest, least uptight subcultures in the LGBTIQ+ world, and Buenos Aires has its own scene.

What is a bear?

A gay man with a big body, usually with a beard and body hair. More than a body type, it's a community identity built around that look.

What does otter mean?

It's the term for a slim, hairy man, within that same bear-community universe.

And cub?

A young bear, or someone who's just entering the community.

What is a chaser?

Someone who's attracted to bears without identifying as one. It's a recognized part of the scene.

What is a daddy?

An older man with a protective, fatherly presence. It overlaps with the bear world often but is its own category.

Are there bear parties in Buenos Aires?

Yes, there are bear-community events and meetups, though not with the weekly frequency of the big parties. They're announced on Instagram and in community groups.

Is there a Bear Week here?

Bear gatherings are part of the community calendar in several cities. For dates in Buenos Aires, follow the local accounts, which are the ones that confirm them.

Can I go if I'm not a bear?

Yes. Bear spaces are some of the most open around: bears, otters, cubs, chasers, and people who just have a good time there all show up.

Are there women in the bear community?

The bear community is historically made up of gay men. For the city's lesbian scene, the references are FEMME, held at FEL!ZA, and JOLIE on Wednesdays.

What's the vibe like?

Less competitive and more about conversation than other scenes. The bar tends to matter as much as the dance floor.

Is there a dress code?

No. It's a community that was actually built against the idea of having to look a certain way.

How do I find out about upcoming meetups?

Instagram, always. Community accounts post with short notice, and that's where dates and venues show up.
