The leather community in Buenos Aires
What it is, where it comes from, how its codes work, and where to find it in the city.
Por Rita Kandela · Cronista de la noche
Leather culture is one of the oldest traditions in the LGBTIQ+ world: it started in the post-war motorcycle clubs of the United States and grew into a subculture with its own aesthetic, codes, and community.
In Buenos Aires it exists, but it works differently from the open-party scene: it's smaller, more word-of-mouth, and organized more around one-off events than fixed venues.
What is the leather community?
It's an LGBTIQ+ subculture born in the mid-20th century around leather, motorcycle clubs, and a masculine aesthetic, which over the years expanded to the whole spectrum of genders and identities.
Is leather the same as BDSM?
Not exactly. They overlap a lot, but leather is a cultural and aesthetic identity, while BDSM is a set of practices. Some people are into one, the other, or both.
Is there a leather scene in Buenos Aires?
Yes, though it's smaller and more private than the open-party scene: it moves through one-off events and groups more than through fixed venues with a weekly schedule.
How do I find it?
Instagram and community groups are the real channel. Fetish parties get announced with short notice and often have limited capacity, so you have to follow the accounts.
What is the hanky code?
It's a system of colored handkerchiefs worn in the back pocket to signal preferences and role. It's more historical than practical today, but it's still part of leather iconography.
Do I need leather to get in?
At a party with an explicit leather dress code, yes, and it's usually stated on the invite. General queer parties in the city have no requirement at all: at JOLIE you can walk in wearing joggers and a cap.
What's the etiquette in a leather space?
The core rule is explicit consent: nobody touches anyone without asking, no photos, and what happens inside stays inside.
Can I go if it's my first time?
Yes, and the best move is to watch before you jump in. Asking questions is welcomed: the community values people who show up wanting to learn the codes.
Is it just for gay men?
Historically, that's where it started, but today lesbians, trans people, and non-binary people are present in the leather and kink scene.
Are there leather events at the general parties?
FEL!ZA, being a cultural club with a different night every day, is the kind of venue where themed nights tend to show up. It's worth checking its lineup week to week.
Can I go without participating in anything?
Yes. Watching, having a drink, and talking is a completely valid way to be there.
What age is required?
The same as any nightlife venue in the country: 18 and up, DNI at the door, no exceptions.
