Going alone and meeting people in queer nightlife
What it's like to show up with no plan, who you talk to, and why it's not unusual.

The most repeated question isn't how much the ticket costs: it's whether you can go alone. The answer is yes, and it's about as common as it gets.
Everything people ask about showing up without company and leaving with people you actually know.
Is it strange to go to a party alone?
No. At JOLIE plenty of people go alone, and since it's a Wednesday with free entry, the barrier to just showing up is very low.
How do people meet each other?
Nights with activities help a lot more than the dance floor alone: karaoke, games, and shows give you something to talk about. FEMME is strong on that front.
What time should I arrive if I'm going alone?
Early. In the first hour you can actually talk without shouting, and it's much easier to click with someone.
What do I do if I don't know anyone?
The bar and the line are the two places where people talk the most. It also helps to go to a night with activities instead of a purely dance-focused one.
Can I go with male friends?
Depends on the party: each one sets its own door policy. JOLIE has a door built for lesbians and bisexual women, and FEL!ZA is a space open to the whole community.
Can I go without drinking?
Yes, and it's more and more common. Nobody's going to ask why you're drinking water.
What if I want to leave early?
You leave. That's part of why Wednesday works so well: you dance for two hours, head out at 1:30am, and the next day you're totally fine.
Is there people my age?
Buenos Aires' queer scene is pretty mixed in age. Since everyone's 18 or older, the range is wide.
Can I just go to watch, without dancing?
Yes. Some people go to talk, grab a drink, or watch the show and never set foot on the dance floor.
What do I do if I feel uncomfortable?
Talk to someone on staff or at the bar. These spaces are set up to handle that fast.
Is it better to go in a group the first time?
It helps, but it's not necessary. If you'd rather go with company the first time and solo the second, that's a perfectly reasonable plan.
Will people talk to me, or do I have to start?
Both happen. What almost never fails is starting with something concrete: the song that's playing, the line at the bar, the karaoke.
