Buenos Aires' gay neighborhood
Palermo, San Telmo, and the Av. Córdoba corridor: where the city's queer pulse really is.
Por Rita Kandela · Cronista de la noche
Anyone who shows up looking for "the gay neighborhood" of Buenos Aires finds something different from what they expected: there's no Castro or Chueca here, no central street strung with flags end to end.
What there is instead is a scene spread across the city, with three zones that hold almost everything and a logic built around parties rather than fixed venues.
What is Buenos Aires' gay neighborhood?
There isn't just one. Palermo has the most parties and LGBTIQ+ bars, San Telmo has the more underground scene, and the Av. Córdoba corridor adds queer cultural spaces like FEL!ZA, at number 3271.
Why isn't there a gaybourhood like in other cities?
Because the Buenos Aires scene historically organized itself around parties and rotating nights, which move venues, rather than around fixed spots on a single block.
What does Palermo have going for it?
The highest concentration of options and the upside of being able to walk between them. JOLIE is there, at Aráoz 2424, Wednesdays from 11pm.
And San Telmo?
It's more underground and more about discovery: less fixed programming, more one-off events, in an old-town setting with a different feel at night.
What's happening on Av. Córdoba?
That's where FEL!ZA is, at number 3271, steps from Santa Fe and Corrientes: a queer cultural club open Wednesday through Sunday that hosts several parties, FEMME among them.
Which area is best to stay in?
Palermo, if nightlife is the plan: it's close to almost everything and easy to get back to.
Can you walk from Palermo to Av. Córdoba?
It's several blocks. Doable by day; at night better to take a taxi or rideshare.
Are there LGBTIQ+ bars open every day?
The steady lineup starts Wednesday. FEL!ZA is the venue with the most open days: Wednesday through Sunday.
Is there a scene outside CABA?
Yes, on the north side and in Greater Buenos Aires, though the fixed weekly lineup is concentrated in the city.
Where does the Pride March happen?
The Buenos Aires march runs from Plaza de Mayo to Congreso, and it's the milestone that shapes the whole lineup that week.
How do I know what's open this week?
Instagram is the most up-to-date channel for each party: the fixed ones always post.
Is it one neighborhood or several?
Several, and that's the short answer: Palermo for the fixed lineup, San Telmo for the underground stuff, Av. Córdoba for the cultural spaces.
